Course description: The purpose of United States History is to tell the story of those who have dedicated theirs lives and passions to create opportunity and guarantee freedoms that we enjoy today. This course provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the struggles that our nation has faced and those who endured them.
Performance standards/Objectives
The following is covered by the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) Curriculum.
The objective is to help students to better understand the history and story of America.
Strategies for Student Learning
Notebook: In my class you need to keep a folder/notebook. I recommend a 3 ring binder.
Notebook tabs should be the same as the grade breakdown on the following page.
Assignment/Readings/Homework
This course is dominated by note taking and reading. Notes don’t normally follow the same pattern of the text, therefore reading the text is strongly encouraged. Homework will include unfinished class work as well as items leading to the next days instruction topics.
Make up work
Homework/Class work you will have 5 school days to make up and return for EXCUSED absences. It is your responsibility to ask for missing work. The same policy applies for Tests. Late will work will have a 15 point penalty per day! Late work is when you were here and just didn’t get it done.
Academic Honesty
NO CHEATING! I have no tolerance for cheating. If you are seen copying you and the person you copied form will receive a grade of “1”. “1” because when your parent asks what is this one for I can respond with “cheating or enabling someone else to cheat!”. SAME APPLIES FOR SLEEPING DURING CLASS AND OR VIDEOS. JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE “DONE” DOESN’T MEAN WE ARE!!!”
Books
McGraw Hill, United States History and Geography, 2018. There is an internet resource for this book and is online. Use your student vue account and or the blog to access
Policies
*Be on time
* Do not get up during instruction unless emergency
* No one leaves 1st or last 10 minutes of class unless called out.
* Abusive or inappropriate language/behavior will not be tolerated.
* When any announcement comes on you will get quiet so we can hear what is going on. If I don’t hear what it is I’m supposed to do, I’m not letting you go.
Class rules
* See student handbook (most are covered in the normal school operations)
* most items are common sense “out of sight, out of mind”
* You will receive zeros for any work we do if you are sleeping in class.
Cell Phone Policy
- You will receive ONE warning (day ONE is your warning)
- Each time you are seen with a cell phone out without expressed consent, you WILL be issued an administrative referral. There will not be a discussion. You will be written up and deal with an Administrator.
Make Ups for Test and Quizzes
Make ups are done by department. There will be a Social Studies teacher at each scheduled make up. Make ups are every Wednesday morning starting at 7:15, and Thursday afternoon starting at 3:35. DO NOT BE LATE
Grading Scale
In efforts to move towards a “standards based” grading system, the grading categories are as follows for this semester: (notebook tabs are the same as follows)
Unit/Standards Categories
Colonization – Constitution
New Republic – Reconstruction
Industry, Reform, Imperialism
Establishment as a World Power
Modern Era
End of Course Test (EOCT) = 20% (this will serve as the “final”) – You do not have to pass the EOCT to graduate, but you DO have to pass this class in order to graduate!!!
Grade book categories
Assessments (Tests): 35%
Class-Home work: 20%
DBQ-Essays / Quiz: 25%
EOCT: 20%
Dates of upcoming tests will be posted on my Blog as well as posted in the classroom at least 1 week ahead of time. Keep in mind dates are subject to change. Each student is given a calendar that displays due dates of tests and subject areas covered. Every attempt is made
to stay with what is printed, but things do occur that tend to slightly throw us of schedule. Due dates will also be posted on the blog as well.
