May 11th- May 15th *Test this Thursday*
Monday- Site Situation
You guys should recall the more developed a country the greater scale of economic activity it will be involved in. The following levels of economic activity help to clarify this idea:
Primary Economic Activity – basic, necessary activities such as agriculture, fishing, and mining
Secondary Economic Activity – taking yields from primary activities and making something such as homes, canned foods, steel, and cars
Tertiary Economic Activity – part of the service sector connecting the manufacturers with the customers such as banks, medical services, shops, and education
Click on the link above to that there are a number of factors that influence the location and spatial distribution of economic activities, including the factors of site and situation
Tuesday- Gentrification
There has been a great trend since the mid 1800’s of migration into urban areas. By 2050 it’s predicted that 70 percent of the human population will live in urban areas. This leads to economic opportunity and challenges. People have primarily moved to cities attempting to find work. There are now well over 300 cities worldwide with more than one million people. This has led to massive urban sprawl, which causes many challenges. Urban sprawl can lead to good, arable land being developed, cause massive traffic issues, and lead to squatter settlements on the outskirts of major cities. In some developed countries, the opposite of urban sprawl is occurring. Gentrification, the restoration and regrowth of run down areas of a city, is becoming a major issue for many large cities in the world, such as Washington D.C. and New York City. Gentrification has pros and cons associated with it. Having wealth enter poor areas leads to revitalization, new investment, and an increasing tax base. On the other hand, it drives up property values which makes housing unaffordable for many longtime residents. Many young professionals are choosing to live inside city centers instead of commuting long distances to work. This is leading to an increase in gentrification.
Click the link above to learn more about gentrification.
Wednesday- Vocab 6 review
Review the vocabulary to prepare for tomorrows test.
Thursday- Unit 6 Test
Complete the final Unit Test by Sunday night please. We will review next week for our "final" grade.
May 4th- May 8th
Monday-Levels of Development
Today, we will begin Unit 6 and it will end with a test on May 15th. Please take advantage of the remaining grades to boost your overall average. Lets begin by understanding economic geography. Economic geography examines how the economies of the world interact with each other and why the economies of individual countries differ so much. Economic data, globalization, trade, demographic data, economic development, etc. are all topics explored within this standard. Click on the link above to Compare the levels of economic development of countries in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and key demographic and social indicators (e.g., literacy rate, life expectancy).
Tuesday- Human Development Index
Despite great progress in the fight against hunger and poverty in the world, sadly it still exists. Yesterday, we examined what factors lead to countries and more importantly the people in those countries to be in poverty. The Human Development Index is designed to take all those factors and rate all the countries in the world. Think of a country in your head besides the U.S and research some answers to the questions provided in the link. **You do not have to submit but there will be questions on Thursday about your country**. Before looking, who do you think ranks #1?
Wednesday- MDC vs LDC
Click the link above to dive further into comparisons between more developed countries (MDC) and lesser developed countries (LDC).
Thursday/Friday- Summary
For a classwork/homework grade please submit a summary of Mon-Wed. In the summary please make sure you answer these questions:
1. Why do different countries vary in levels of development
2. What country did you research for HDI?
a. It's rank according to HDI and its score
b. Life expanctancy?
c. Infant mortality rate?
d. Avg years of schooling
e. GDP per capita
d. What could this country to specifically to increase its score. *Be specific- simply stating gaining more education will not count*
3. What are 5 differences between MDC and LDC?
Submit by Sunday please
Apr 27th- May 1st
Monday- Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can change the future for countries. Major disasters put a strain on, many times, limited resources, especially in impoverished areas. A perfect example of how natural disasters can disproportionately affect poor countries is the recent story of Haiti. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, was rocked by a massive earthquake in 2010 which completely devastated the country. Still reeling and attempting to fully recover from that disaster, Haiti was hit by Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016. Haiti is not equipped to handle these events so it relies on humanitarian aid from the rest of the world. The United States in not immune to massive natural disasters. Two clear instances of massive destruction both came from hurricanes such as, Katrina and Mitch. Click the link above to learn about 5 disasters and how local, federal, and international agencies help in these times.
Tuesday- UN Sustainability Goals
The insatiable want for new products and food has led to a crisis of sustainability. With a growing middle class around the world, more people have the money to buy things they have never had access to before. This along with the ease of buying things online and globalization has put great stress on our natural world. Wealth leads to increased demand for more “stuff.” Wealth can also lead to innovative solutions. Click the link above to see how the United Nations is trying to combat these issues by 2030.
Wednesday/Thursday-Review Guide
Choose 10 topics and explain them from the review guide. Please submit for extra credit on your test.
TEST: Submit by Sunday!

Apr 20th- Apr 24th
Monday- Water Scarcity
Now that we have seen from last Thursday, we all know that water plays a MAJOR part in growing not only crops but animals as well. Did you know it takes 1,100 gallons of water to produce an 8 ounce steak or 23 gallons of water to produce 1 almond. One recent study stated that states use about 80% of their clean water to grow food. So, what if you don't have access to clean water like millions of people worldwide? How would it affect your life? Click on the powerpoint above and look at the first 6 slides to learn more.
Tuesday- Pollution
We have all heard the saying that "you are what you eat". Today, we look how pollution can affect our health by way of the food system. Take what we learned previously on how food is grown ie. soil and water. Now as you look these slides draw some conclusions on how runoff, acid rain, and waste can contribute to contaminated food.
Wednesday- Industrialization
Today, we will shift away from the food supply and look more towards industry (manufacturing) and its effects on the environment. As you review the powerpoint above, I would like for you to focus on the positives and negatives of industrialization as a whole and for each individual example that is provided. Tomorrow, you will again give your thoughts on what on the previous 3 days. Next Thursday we will test over the material.
Thursday- Assignment to Submit
From the 3 topics that we discussed this week, Water Scarcity, Pollution and Industrialization, explain what the positives and negatives are for each. Then describe, with detail, if you think the negatives are actually negative and the positives are actually positive. Finally, whatever you believe to be negative, discuss what could be done to help fix or limit the problem. **Your replies should be thoughtful and in detail** Please submit by Sunday night.
Apr 13th- Apr17th
Monday- Introduction to Agriculture
Review the notes above and understand all 3 phases of Agricultural Revolutions that have taken place over time. Make sure you become familiar with GMO's and their intent.
Tuesday- Agricultural Revolution Video
Watch the video above that will shine more light on the agricultural revolutions throughout history.
Wednesday- Where did that come from?
After getting more insight about GMO foods and how they started with the 3rd Ag Revolution along with the positive and negative benefits, think about your favorite meal. Now take about 20 or so minutes and research about 5 ingredients in that favorite food and see if it contains any GMO products.
Thursday- Mass Production of Food
During this week, we have seen how the production of our food has evolved from hunting and gathering to genetically altering food in order to feed "the world". We produce enough food now to feed everyone living on the planet but yet some people still go hungry. Hunger has many reasons why it happens but one is OVER consumption. The U.S consumes more than any other nation in the world, some say that's horrible but some say it is a blessing. Watch the video that's linked above about the meat industry and mass production (these clips take place in China but the U.S is very similar to what's portrayed). After watching (it has no sound), write a half page (10 sentences or more) summary on this week. Make sure to include:
1. What the 1st, 2nd, 3rd revolution
2. Do you believe the 3rd revolution harms peoples health (GMO)
3. Your thoughts on the mass production of meat
4. Your favorite meal and if those ingredients most likely had GMO's. If has meat do you think it was prepared like the video.
5. Do you agree or disagree with 2,3 and why?
Please submit assignment by Sunday night

Monday- Population Density Worksheet.... Population Density Maps.... Population Pyramid Video
Let's start off this week by reviewing the population pyramids by clicking the link above. Pay special attention to the three examples at the end and the problems that countries with those types of pyramid shapes would have to find solutions for. Furthermore, brainstorm on how those shapes formed (why high death rate, high birth rate or vice versa). Then lets look at Population Density which is a measurement of population in a given area. Turn to your pop density map hot questions worksheet in your packet or click the link above, then click the pop density maps. After you have done this just complete the answers for one page and we will finish second sheet tomorrow. You will have to recall information learned in Unit 1 to complete some questions

Wednesday- Demographic Transition Model.... DTM Graph...
Click the link above and review the PowerPoint slides of the Demographic Transition Model. The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) shows population trends of two demographic characteristics – Death and Birth Rates – to to show a a country's population growth as that country develops. As you review each pay close attention to the specific relationship between birth rate (number of annual births per one thousand people) and death rate (number of annual deaths per one thousand people). As these rates change in each stage watch how they impact the country's total population. After looking over the PowerPoint draw the graph and label it according to the last slide. A graph as been provided for you in the second link but also in your packet.
Thursday- DTM Notes (guided)…
Complete the notes above detailing the demographic transition model. The notes are in your packet but if you did not receive one just copy these down. I will be in touch as to how we will cover the next unit now that we are drawing near the end of the packet from this unit.

WWYD.....Thanos 1...
Unit 4 involves Population Geography. In this unit we examine why people live where they do, what factors influence people to move, the difference in how states (countries) treat their citizens, population policies, refugee and migrant issues, etc. We also look at the use of maps when studying populations while analyzing demographic data.
**In the first assignment WWYD (link above), I want you to first get a feel for some of the challenges the United States faces when allowing people to enter our country. After the end of the unit will revisit this assignment to see if our choices have changed based upon the information you have gained. Secondly, read the Thanos article and write a summary on whether you agree or disagree with Thanos' thinking on saving earth. Please keep the article as part of your packet for when we return.
Tuesday- Unit 4 Vocab
Hopefully, yesterday should have gotten you started on thinking about the world's population and what problems overpopulation can cause. Today, we will become familiar with the important concepts of the unit by researching the vocabulary. Hope everyone is healthy and doing well.
Wednesday- Dollarstreet
Today, we will look at how different populations live around the world compared to you. Click on the Dollarstreet link above and examine one of the many families listed by simply selecting one. Next, to the right of the screen click visit this home and from there analyze all the aspects of the family you chose ex (Roof, Backyard, Kitchen, Bedroom). After looking at how this family lives, write a small summary of the family you chose.
Thursday- Population PowerPoint…..Population Pyramid Practice
For today, lets begin with a small PowerPoint that will allow you to become familiar with a population pyramid. A pyramid shows the distribution of various age groups in a population (typically that of a country or region of the world), which forms the shape of a pyramid when the population is growing. Males are conventionally shown on the left and females on the right with percentages of males and females shown at the base. After looking over the slides, take some time to analyze the Population Pyramid Practice to become more familiar. Tomorrow, you will create one given certain data.
Friday- More Pyramid Practice
Hopefully, the idea of what a population pyramid is and its concept has given you some understanding. It's okay if you do not completely understand it all. Today, lets build one given the information that is provided in the link. Simply draw a pyramid given these numbers. I strongly suggest using NOTEBOOK paper so the lines provided allow for clean graphs. Monday, I will post a video that will help more with understanding. Have a great weekend.

Tuesday- Complete Population Density Worksheet... Density Video
Please remember that if you do not understand any concepts so far to reach out to me. Please complete the rest of the worksheet pertaining to population density and click the link above to watch a short video on density maps and what we can learn from them.
Friday-One Child Policy - Natalist Policies..
Today, look over the PowerPoint (9 slides) about natalist policies and try to grasp what countries try to implement on slowing or growing their population. Then watch the short video on China's One Child Policy, YOU WILL NEED TO EMAIL ALL COMPLETED WORK FOR THIS PACKET TO ME BY MONDAY MORNING AT 10 A.M.
Mar 16th-Mar 20th
Monday
